The weather’s getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and many of our customers are thinking about sunscreen for their guests. As we all know, sun protection is important year around, yet sunscreen is one of those products your guests often forget when hitting the pool, the golf course or just venturing outside. Here are some tips for incorporating sunscreen into your property’s list of available amenities.
What Kind of Sunscreen Should You Offer?
When it comes to providing sunscreen to your guests in a hotel, club or spa setting, there are some requirements that should be considered. Back in 2011, the FDA ruled that broad spectrum sunscreen had to protect against UVA & UVB rays emitted by the sun (before that time they only had to protect against UVB). Additionally, SPF requirements must be taken into consideration. Sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 15 only blocks 93 percent of UVB rays, while SPF 30 sunscreens block 97 percent, and SPF 50 sunscreens block 98 percent. Be sure to select a sunscreen that matches the needs of your guests while at the same time, staying within your budget constraints.
Where Should You Offer Sunscreen for Guest Use?
Depending upon the type of property you manage, you may wish to have sunscreen available in a variety of common areas. Here are a few of our suggestions based on 30 years of experience working with properties around the world.
- In Your Locker Rooms – Since guests often visit your locker room or changing room before they venture outside, a nice dispenser of quality sunscreen in the vanity area is a perfect reminder to protect themselves from the sun’s harmful rays.
- Poolside – Another great place to offer sunscreen is near your pool check-in areas. It shows guests that you’re thinking about their well-being and providing sunscreen is seen as a valuable benefit. Sunscreen dispensers can also be distributed strategically throughout your golf course and your tennis courts.
- At the Snack Bar & Gift Shop – Guests often visit your snack bar during their outdoor activity so it’s another great place to remind them to reapply sunscreen throughout the day. Additionally, some of our customers offer branded sunscreen bottles in their gift shops that can be purchased as a gift or souvenir.
- In Your Guest Rooms – If your property offers lodging, you may choose to include personal bottles of sunscreen as an in-room amenity or combine it into a gift pack for VIP guests. Your guests will be delighted by the extra touch, especially if they forgot to pack their own sunscreen.
How Should Sunscreen Be Displayed & Dispensed?
As with all the other amenities you offer to guests, you want to make sure that the sunscreen you provide is displayed as attractively as possible. ReadyCare’s extensive Private Label Capabilities give you the ability to customize your sunscreen bottles and dispensers with your property logo. It’s a great way to help create a positive experience and make your guests feel valued, pampered and appreciated. If you’re offering your sunscreen in an outdoor setting, you also need to use the right kind of dispenser that will protect your sunscreen from the negative effects of direct sunlight which can deteriorate its protective properties. For this reason, ceramic dispensers and white PET Boston Round bottles are two of our long-time favorites for sunscreen.
